In spite of achieving worldwide fame for her study of entomology, specifically the metamorphosis of the butterfly, today the appropriation of Maria Sibylla Merian’s works often removes the insects she so carefully observed. Consider, for instance, the USPS stamps, the vintage rose and tulip, designed by Jeanne Greco featuring the artwork of Merian.

If we’ve learned anything in this life, it’s that nothing is so perfect as to not include a bug or two. Here, in this design, we see that love can be flowers and romance, but also forgives all manner of things including a couple of bugs.
